Grothman Statement on Friday's Executive Order

Washington, January 30, 2017 | Bernadette Green (202-225-2476)

“Friday’s executive order is just another example of President Trump fulfilling his campaign promises. Our focus, first and foremost, should be on defending America’s borders and keeping Americans safe.

“It is important to specify that this is not a Muslim ban, as it has been widely misreported in the media. This executive order focuses only on improving our nation’s vetting process for those coming from areas of intensified conflict and with known terror groups attempting to infiltrate the U.S. through our refugee program.

“This temporary ban allows the government time to review and update screening requirements to keep our citizens safe – something that has become increasingly important as acts of terror happen more and more across the world.

“In fact, President Trump admitting up to 50,000 refugees per year is similar to the average numbers of refugees that Presidents Bush and Obama admitted during their presidencies. Additionally, this executive order is not intended to affect those with green cards or those in our country legally.

“Some critics are referring to the Trump plan as isolationism. The U.S. swears in hundreds of thousands of new citizens each year. We have millions of immigrants here illegally and are removing few. We are one of the few countries in the world to have birthright citizenship.

“Given terrorist concerns and the temptation of too many people to come here and never leave, I think President Trump is right to exercise some long-overdue caution.”
