500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation
On October 31, 1517, 95 theses were nailed to the door of All Saints Church by Martin Luther. These 95 theses would become the defining moment in the Protestant reformation, transforming the culture, political structures, economics and education of Western civilization.

That is why I introduced H. Res. 597, to recognize the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. This bipartisan legislation observes Protestantism and its significance to millions of Americans. I will always remain committed to maintaining and celebrating America's guarantee of religious liberty.

Pell Grant Modernization
Pell Grants have helped millions of students achieve their dream of graduating college. However, in many cases across the country students are taking six or more years to complete their college education. This extra time at college can unnecessarily burden them with thousands of dollars in additional student debt.

To resolve this, I have introduced H.R. 4162, the Pell Grant Modernization Act. This bill would help students by streamlining the Pell Grant program to encourage getting a degree in four years. By changing the required number of semester hours from 12 to the standard 15, students will be able to achieve their goals and enter the workforce more quickly.

Wisconsin in D.C.
It is always a pleasure to meet with fellow Wisconsinites in Washington, D.C.!

The future of AIPAC is bright as I discussed the US-Israel relationship with students from Homestead High School (my alma mater!).

It was an honor to discuss veterans issues with Jake Leinenkugel as he presented me with this year's Veterans Day pin.

In the News

This week, Republican leadership released their tax plan, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. I shared my thoughts on Gray TV, seen here.

Tax reform is long overdue and this bill has several features that will put more money in your pocket. I believe that it is vitally important to target cuts to the middle class, which is why I am looking over every aspect of the bill to find ways to help American workers, the backbone of this country.

Student loan debt is a growing problem in our country and we need a solution. Jessica Schmidt, 30, is a graduate student at UW-Madison and the interest on her debt it taking a toll. I am calling on Congress to dismiss party lines to find a solution that will help Jessica, and the millions of people with student loan debt.

I have joined a bipartisan coalition to cosponsor fellow Wisconsin member Mark Pocan's bill H.R. 1614, the Student Loan Refinancing Act. Just like refinancing a mortgage, I believe students should be able to refinance their student loans. This will enable them to repay their debt more quickly so they can better support themselves and their families.

Learn more about Jessica's story and Congress's efforts to help here.
