Early Friday morning, Congress came together to pass a two-year bipartisan budget agreement that includes funding for items like disaster relief, infrastructure and a long-term extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
One of the main reasons I voted for this bipartisan budget is because it provides $6 billion to fight the opioid epidemic that’s become a national health crisis in this country. It’s a tragedy that drug overdose is now the leading killer of Americans under 50, and this budget will fund grants and prevention programs across the U.S. to help put an end to senseless drug-related deaths.
Additional benefits of this agreement include a structural change to Medicare that will drive down prescription costs for seniors, and much needed support for our men and women in uniform, ensuring they have the resources they need while defending freedom at home and abroad.

On Monday, I was honored to participate in the nation's first Rural Prosperity Roundtable in Ripon. This national initiative, led by USDA Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development, Anne Hazlett, intends to draw attention to the unique challenges facing rural America, and focus on solutions that work for everyone.
Thanks to Ripon College for hosting!

Fighting for Those With Disabilities |
I recently teamed up with Congressman Sensenbrenner to send a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) detailing how one of their rules would negatively affect Wisconsin residents.
The CMS "Settings Rule" would significantly limit the living and workplace settings available to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Under the rule, if these individuals receive Medicaid benefits, they could not choose to live in a place that best suits their needs or work in an environment that accommodates their unique abilities. Instead, they would be restricted to choose residences and jobs that are pre-approved by the government.
My letter informs CMS that this rule does not work for Wisconsin residents and strongly urges them to allow citizens with disabilities the opportunity to live as comfortable and fulfilling lives as possible. |
Tonight's airing of the opening ceremonies will officially kick-off the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Wisconsin is well represented this year. Here is a list of all the Wisconsinites competing.
