Today, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution (CR) and a six year reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This CR will fund the government for another month in order to work out the details on a long-term spending bill. In order for the Senate to pass this CR, 60 votes are needed, which means Democrats will need to vote yes in order to avoid a government shutdown.
For those who receive Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, disability insurance or utilize the VA hospital, the government continues to fund these benefits under a shutdown. |
I believe life begins at conception.
On Wednesday, I took to the floor of the House to speak in support of the sanctity of human life and rights of the unborn. We have a moral and civic duty to protect those who are voiceless and defenseless, namely our unborn children.
On Friday, with my support, the House passed H.R. 4712, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.This bill will 1) Require health care practitioners to do all they can to preserve the life of the child as they would other babies born prematurely and requires the practitioner to ensure that the child is immediately transferred and admitted to the hospital, 2) Establish strong criminal penalties for anyone who intentionally kills, or attempts to kill, a child born alive and 3) Allow the woman upon whom the abortion was performed or attempted to obtain appropriate relief through civil action.

Friday was also the March for Life in Washington, D.C., where I met with Wisconsinites in the office and on the street. It is always so heartening to see the outpouring of support for the pro-life movement, especially from the younger generation. It was great to see everyone who made it out. Keep up the good work!

Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr, Day. I was honored to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King at Marian University's Community Prayer Breakfast in Fond du Lac.
On Wednesday, I met with The Wisconsin Committee to Protect Pensions. They are one of the most active groups in DC and it's always a pleasure to have them in the office!
The same day, I had a great, productive meeting with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Capitol Hill.
