Get Ready for Tax Day

With Tax Day approaching on April 15, 2026, many families across Wisconsin are wrapping up their returns and seeing firsthand how recent tax changes are making a difference.

Thanks to the passage of the Working Families Tax Cut, working families, seniors, and individuals are keeping more of their hard-earned money. I was proud to support these commonsense reforms that reward work, strengthen families, and help make everyday life more affordable.

In fact, early data shows these policies are already having an impact. According to the IRS, the average tax refund is up nearly 11% compared to last year, putting more money back into the pockets of hardworking Americans.

Here are a few of the key provisions you may notice when filing your taxes this year:

Bigger Standard Deductions

  • $15,750 standard deduction for single filers
  • $31,500 standard deduction for joint filers
  • These increases mean more of your income is protected from taxation

New Tax Relief for Seniors

  • A new $6,000 Senior Deduction for eligible Americans age 65 and older
  • Helps reduce or eliminate tax liability for many seniors living on fixed incomes

Expanded Child Tax Credit

  • A permanent $2,200 Child Tax Credit per child
  • Designed to support families raising the next generation

Lower Taxes on Tips and Overtime

The Working Families Tax Cut introduced new deductions that reward hard work:

  • Up to $25,000 deduction on tip income
  • Up to $12,500 deduction on overtime pay

Support for American-Made Vehicles

  • Deduction of up to $10,000 in auto loan interest for qualifying American-made vehicles

New Savings Opportunities for Families

The law also created new tax-advantaged savings accounts for newborns, helping families start planning early for their children’s future.
