Judge Brett Kavanaugh

I strongly believe in upholding the Constitution and promoting the ideas that have made America great. The job of the Supreme Court is to interpret the law. The Court is not meant to be filled with activists and ideologues, but with men and women who understand the law and know when the government has overstepped its bounds.

That is why I was pleased to watch President Trump's announcement on Monday, where he nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, replacing the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Kavanaugh's education and conservative track record of on the Washington, D.C. Court of Appeals makes him a worthy choice to inherit the seat left by Justice Kennedy. During his career, Kavanaugh has staunchly defended the Constitution, making sure overzealous laws and regulations do not infringe on our freedoms.

The Supreme Court has made decisions upholding Obamacare, as well as questionable decisions on government housing. It has become a court that James Madison and our Founding Fathers did not intend when they wrote the Constitution.

Those who voted for President Trump because of their confidence in his ability to nominate a capable and thoughtful Supreme Court justice will not be disappointed. Kavanaugh's brand of conservatism will help create a limited government, and a government fit for a moral and religious people.

National Civility Day
Thursday was the National Day of Civility. I was happy to join my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to acknowledge that yes, we do have differences of opinions on some issues, but that is no reason to resort to rude behavior or incite violence.

Left to right: Mike Johnson (R-LA), Charlie Crist (D-FL), me!

And, just in case you missed it, I recently joined a bipartisan group of nearly 150 Congressmen in signing a commitment to civility.
