Born-Alive Abortion Survivors

This past Monday, 44 Senators blocked consideration of S. 311, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, a bill that would prevent infanticide and ensure life-saving care for babies that are born alive after an attempted abortion. It is disgraceful that sitting Members of Congress so easily and openly turn their backs on our country’s most vulnerable.

In the House of Representatives, I recently signed on as a cosponsor of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, H.R. 962. I have always been an ardent defender of pro-life policies and I believe it is imperative that H.R. 962 be brought to the House Floor for a vote immediately to protect babies that survive abortions.

There is no reason why any child who survives an abortion shouldn't receive the same care or have access to the same life-saving measures as other babies. Encouraging and supporting infanticide is unacceptable and shameful. I, along with many of my Republican colleagues, have urged Democratic leadership to bring this bill to the floor for consideration so that we can combat this horrific practice and give abortion survivors the care they deserve. Even as we move further into the 116th Congress and this story may fade from the headlines, I will remain fully committed to protecting the rights of the unborn.

Natural Resources Management Act
This week, in a showing of bipartisanship, the House of Representatives passed the Natural Resources Management Act, sending it to the President's desk to be signed into law. I was proud to vote in support of this monumental public lands legislation.

The Natural Resources Management Act included permanent re-authorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), along with funding for hundreds of state parks. Since 1965, the LWCF has redirected $3.9 billion in oil and gas leasing royalties to fund more than 40,000 public lands projects across the country, all without spending valuable taxpayer dollars. The act also created six new National Parks Service units, established new protections for wildlife habitats and designated 1.3 million acres of new wilderness.

I am proud to represent a beautiful district with a variety of wildlife and natural attractions. I believe it is important to encourage conservation at all levels in order to protect the natural environment for our citizens and future generations to enjoy. The Natural Resources Management Act will ensure that our public lands are appropriately taken care of. I am glad that Congress was able to unite in a bipartisanship manner to ensure the passage of this groundbreaking public lands legislation.

Economic News
With continuous growth in the fourth quarter of 2018, the U.S. economy grew by 3.1 percent last year. This marks the highest rate of economic growth since 2005. Thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and a strong job market, the unemployment rate hit record lows, wages increased and consumer spending remained high. The fourth quarter also saw an increase in business investment nationwide, indicating sustainable and continuous growth in the future.
