Calling for a Hearing on the Border Crisis

Since my first day in Washington, I have been honored to serve on the House Oversight and Reform Committee. This Committee is essential to government operations because we are responsible for identifying problems, shining light on the situation, and proposing reforms to prevent government inefficiencies from being repeated.

Since March of last year, my Republican colleagues and I have been calling for an investigation into the situation at the Southern border. At the time, the most recent data we had was from February 2021, where we saw a 175 percent increase in the number of illegal encounters over February of the previous year. Things would continue to get worse, with several months hitting 20-year highs and ending with the highest number of December encounters in the history of the Department of Homeland Security.

This week, I was joined by my Republican colleagues on the House Oversight and Reform Committee in once again calling for Chairwoman Maloney (D-NY) to hold a hearing on the deteriorating situation at the border.

Having visited our Southern border five times last year, I have spoken with countless Border Patrol agents and local officials who are overwhelmed and frustrated they cannot sufficiently protect the border due to President Biden’s dismantling of our immigration system. Because of these inadequate policies, Mexican drug cartels are thriving by profiting off drug trafficking and shepherding people into the country. In Calendar Year 2021, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported over 2 million encounters with illegal migrants. That number does not include people who got across the border that we do not know about, which is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.

Moreover, it was recently reported that fentanyl is now the leading cause of death among adults from ages 18 to 45. Knowing this deadly drug is tearing families apart, it is our duty to do everything in our power to get it off the street to protect American communities nationwide. Unfortunately, without an Oversight hearing on the border, we won't hear testimony from Border Patrol agents on fentanyl and how to keep it out of the country.

For nearly a year, we have repeatedly asked Chairwoman Maloney to hold a hearing on the historic levels of illegal encounters at the border, why so many migrants are being let go into the interior, and what they’re doing about the massive spike in fentanyl deaths attributed to their neglect. Despite this, I want you to know that I will continue to aggressively pursue answers and accountability from the entire Biden Administration on this unmitigated disaster at the border.

The President’s Energy Policies

Over the last several decades, the United States has made great strides in reducing pollution. For example, from 2009 to 2019, we scaled-down our CO2 emissions by 7 percent, while China increased emissions by 38 percent. In fact, air pollution as a whole in the United States has declined 73 percent since 1980. Needless to say, our environment is much cleaner today compared to the latter part of last century, and the U.S. has done a much better job at this than many other countries.

The improved emission rates of the United States are largely a product of the free market and competition, not solely government policies. With that said, President Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan would handcuff American businesses with Green New Deal regulations while at the same time sending taxpayer dollars to manufacturers overseas that do not abide by the same standards we do at home. By discouraging domestic energy production, President Biden is eliminating thousands of jobs for American workers, driving oil and gas prices to levels not seen in years, rewarding higher-polluting countries, and threatening our national security.

I spoke about this on the House floor, which you can watch below.
