Bill to Support Immigrant Self Sufficiency
This week, I introduced H.R. 848, which will require an individual to be a U.S. citizen in order to receive welfare benefits, such as Medicare, Medicaid and SNAP. We need to clean up the welfare system so those who really do need help get it, but those who are able to work, should. It is estimated that H.R. 848 would save taxpayers $60 billion in its first year.

H.R. 848 will not only prevent non U.S. citizens from taking advantage of our welfare system, but it will also encourage more hard-working immigrants to come to America legally so that they too can enjoy the services offered to us as citizens of the United States.

A study published in 2015 shows that both legal and illegal immigrant households take advantage of the welfare system far more than native-born households. Moreover, Politifact confirms that half of immigrant families receive some form of welfare.

I believe this legislation provides a better strategy to support immigrant self-sufficiency and protect taxpayers. I look forward to continuing my work to clean up the welfare system.

Veterans Update
This week, the U.S. Department of Labor announced on January 31, 2019, that the application period is open for job creators to apply for the HIRE Vets Medallion Award.

This great program recognizes small businesses, non-profit organizations, and large companies for their leadership in recruiting, employing, and retaining America’s veterans.

I support this program as it gives our nation's decorated veterans an opportunity for employment and professional development.

For more information on the program, visit HireVets.gov.

This week, I along with 20 colleagues, sent this letter to Arlington National Cemetery requesting visitors be allowed to bring American flags to honor their fallen family members.
