VP Harris Has Failed Overseeing the Border Crisis

On March 24, 2021, President Joe Biden tasked Vice President Kamala Harris with addressing the crisis at our Southern border. Today marks the 87th day of her tenure in this position and she has yet to visit the border to speak with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, local law enforcement officials on the ground, and see firsthand the crisis that continues to spin out of control under her and President Biden’s watch.

From January-May of this year, CBP has encountered roughly 712,000 people trying to cross the Southern border. For perspective, there were roughly 922,000 encounters in all of 2019 and roughly 590,000 in 2018. There is a humanitarian crisis at our Southern border. People are being used and abused while the drug cartels (who are also the ones who conduct human trafficking) line their pockets.

That is why I made a push this week to bring more attention to this crisis and call on President Biden to remove Vice President Harris from her role as the White House point person overseeing the border and replace her with someone who will take the crisis seriously.

I and my colleagues held a press conference at the Capitol to discuss the crisis and why it is imperative to secure our border and fix President Biden's heinous immigration policies. This is important not only for national security, but for the sake of people being taken advantage of by the cartels.

I was also joined by 55 of my colleagues in sending a letter directly to President Biden pointing out the facts about the border crisis and demanding he remove Vice President Harris from her role overseeing the border. She is obviously not taking this great responsibility seriously because she hasn't even visited the border. Her leadership on this issue has been less than ineffective, it has been non-existent.

Carried Interest Tax Fairness

Many people say the tax code is unfair and as a former tax preparer, I concur. The carried interest loophole is a prime example, as this loophole allows hedge fund managers to pay taxes at capital gains rates, which are often lower than the individual’s tax bracket.

Carried interest is the fee hedge fund managers take from the funds they manage and is intended to be their main source of income. These funds often contain billions of dollars, so the fee amounts to millions, sometimes hundreds of millions. There is no reason high-flying hedge fund managers should be paying a lower rate than the manufacturing worker, pipe-fitter or mechanic doing twice the work.

That is why, this week, I introduced the Tax Fairness Act to bring more equity to the U.S. tax code by eliminating the carried interest loophole.

Let me be clear, this is not an indiscriminate tax hike on the rich. This legislation addresses a tax loophole that is being exploited by people who sometimes make hundreds of millions of dollars per year. Most hard-working Americans are not able to treat their income as capital gains and therefore do not have access to this special tax treatment. To eliminate this inequity, my bill will close the loophole by taxing carried interest as ordinary income.

Weekly Roundup

Congratulations to Garrett Clark on earning the rank of Eagle Scout! It was a pleasure to celebrate this achievement alongside his parents in Green Lake.

Anti-Semitism on college campuses is, unfortunately, alive and well. In fact, 63% of all religious-based hate crimes in the U.S. are against Jewish people. I and my colleagues are demanding that U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona crack down on these senseless hate crimes against Jewish students.

On Monday, we celebrated Flag Day. Flag Day was first observed in Waubeka, WI in 1885. I’m proud that this tradition, that is now celebrated throughout the nation, began right here in Wisconsin's 6th District.

Also on Monday, the U.S. Army celebrated 246 years of protecting American freedoms and values. I am forever grateful to all of the brave Americans who have answered the call to serve.

The city of Washington, DC is fully open, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi is keeping the U.S. House closed to the public. I joined my colleagues in a letter calling on Speaker Pelosi to reopen the People’s House because Americans have a right to visit their elected officials.

It is an honor to represent Wisconsin, home to the best dairy in the world and so much more. Happy National Dairy Month!

Wisconsin farmers produce safe, high-quality meat, but Department of Agriculture processing regulations favor large corporate meat companies. I cosponsored the bipartisan PRIME Act so our farmers have the opportunity to get their meat on the shelves for Wisconsin families.

I have always encouraged students to explore all options after high school, like career and technical education that leads to good, high-paying jobs. It was great to meet with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors of Wisconsin to discuss the need to further address the skilled-labor shortage in our state through apprenticeships.
