Protecting Americans’ Constitutional Rights

I recently introduced the Restoring Civil Rights Attorney’s Fees Act to ensure Americans have a fair opportunity to enforce their constitutional rights in court. Congress established the Civil Rights Attorney’s Fees Awards Act in 1976 so that a person’s ability to protect their constitutional rights would not depend on whether they could afford a lengthy legal battle.

Unfortunately, recent court decisions have narrowed who qualifies as a “prevailing party” and, as a result, made it more difficult for people to recover attorney’s fees even when their lawsuit leads to meaningful changes. For example, a government agency may abandon an unconstitutional policy after a lawsuit is filed, but the individual who brought the case could still be left responsible for the legal costs.

My bill would restore the ability to recover attorney’s fees when litigation results in meaningful, enforceable relief. This includes final court-ordered relief, preliminary relief such as an injunction or temporary restraining order, and situations where litigation prompts the government to voluntarily end an unconstitutional law, regulation, or policy.

If someone has to go to court to protect their constitutional rights, they should not be discouraged from doing so because of the cost. The government should also not be able to avoid accountability simply by changing course after a lawsuit forces it to confront an unconstitutional policy. This legislation would help ensure Americans have a meaningful way to stand up for their rights.

25 Years Later, We Remember

Friday marked 25 years since September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed our country. We remember those we lost, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the first responders who ran toward danger to save others.

In the days following the attacks, Americans came together in a remarkable way. Neighbors helped neighbors, communities rallied around those in need, and our country stood united. That spirit of courage, compassion, and patriotism is something we should never forget.

As we reflect on September 11, I hope we continue to honor those we lost by remembering the courage of the heroes who answered the call and the strength of the American people during one of our nation's darkest moments.

May God bless the victims and their families, our first responders, and the United States of America.

Remembering Charlie Kirk

It has been one year since we lost Charlie Kirk. Charlie dedicated his life to engaging young Americans in our political process and encouraging them to take an active role in the future of our country. He was also open about his Christian faith and the important role it played in his life.

Charlie was never afraid to speak openly about what he believed. He understood that in a free country, we will not always agree with one another. That is why it is so important that we continue to defend our right to have those disagreements peacefully and respectfully.

There is no place for political violence in America. No matter how strongly we may disagree with someone, violence can never be the answer. Our Republic depends on our ability to debate our differences, speak our minds, and ultimately settle those differences through our political process.

As we remember Charlie, I am keeping his family, friends, and loved ones in my prayers. I hope we can honor his memory by continuing to value faith, free speech, and the ability to disagree without violence.
