Dr. Chris Kirkpatrick Whistleblower Protection Act

I was proud to support and cosponsor the Dr. Chris Kirkpatrick Whistleblower Protection Act. This week Speaker Ryan signed it and sent it to President Trump's desk. The courageous men and women who bring unjust behavior to light should not feel threatened simply for doing the right thing. This bill is an important step in making sure that federal agencies cannot ruin lives by retaliating against whistleblowers.

Congress Passes a Budget
Yesterday, Congress passed the Fiscal Year 2018 budget. I introduced an amendment that would have reduced mandatory spending by an additional $200 billion over ten years, which, unfortunately, was not adopted. You can read more about my amendment here.

While I do believe spending could have been further reduced, Congress passed a budget that provides the framework for tax reform. My vision for tax reform provides bold, fresh solutions for all Americans with simpler filing, fewer brackets and more money in your pocket.

In Defense of Christians
It was an honor to be invited by In Defense of Christians to speak with its members. Thanks for all of your work to protect Christians and Christianity in the Middle East.

I am proud to join the fight against Christian persecution with my bill H. Res. 407. This bill, which has dozens of bipartisan cosponsors, condemns the worldwide epidemic of Christian persecution by groups like ISIS and Boko Haram. Unfortunately, these are not the only offenders, which is why it is so important to take a strong stance against the violence and let Christians around the world know that the United States stands with them.

P.S. The House passed three bills this week imposing further sanctions on Iran and Hezbollah-
H.R. 1698H.R. 3329 and H.R. 3342.

Stop Settlement Slush Funds
With my support, the House passed H.R. 732, the Stop Settlement Slush Funds Act, on October 24.

When the Department of Justice settles a case, officials sometimes have the defendant donate to third party groups not affiliated with the victims. H.R. 732 puts an end to this practice, which too often results in slush funds being funneled to activist groups. This returns the power of the purse to Congress and in turn, to you.

Congress Passes A Budget

Yesterday, Congress agreed to a budget that will fund the government through 2027. I introduced an amendment that would have reduced mandatory spending by an additional $200 billion, which, unfortunately, was not adopted. Below are my thoughts on the mandatory spending cuts. You can read more about my amendment here.

"For eight years, Republicans have promised to reign in out-of-control spending and scale back expanding deficits,” said Grothman“Now that we’re in control, we have the chance to deliver on these promises. Unfortunately, the Senate budget did not include the $200 billion in mandatory spending cuts that were included in the House budget.

“That is why I today submitted an amendment to the House Rules Committee to include the House-passed $200 billion mandatory spending cuts in the Senate budget. While the amendment was not agreed to, it is something that I will continue fighting for in future budget discussions.”

While I do believe spending could have been further reduced, Congress continues its streak of legislative successes with a budget that provides the framework for tax reform. My vision for tax reform provides bold, fresh solutions for all Americans with simpler filing, fewer brackets and more money in your pocket.
