Education and Workforce Committee
Examining career and technical education to prepare students for the workforce
Last reauthorized in 2006, the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act provides states with federal funding for programs designed to prepare students in technical careers. Since the law expired in 2012, state and local educators have highlighted the importance of developing and implementing programs that best meet student and industry needs. Time and time again, employers in my district tell me that young people looking for employment do not have the skills they need for today’s careers. We discussed ways to improve these technical programs to ensure students have these skills and the knowledge necessary to succeed.

Small businesses under attack
This week in committee, we passed the “Protecting Local Business Opportunity Act”. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has been consistently launching attacks against American small businesses. Recently, the NLRB redefined what it means to be an employer. The new rules provide less freedom for current business owners and discourages new businesses, especially small businesses, from being created. That’s why I voted for the Protecting Local Business Opportunity Act in committee. It restores good labor policy that serves the best interest of employers and employees.

House Budget Committee
The House Budget Committee started an initiative called, Restoring the Trust for All Generations. This hearing highlighted America’s most vulnerable citizens. I questioned Larry Woods, CEO of the Winston-Salem Housing Authority, on the prevalence of fraud and abuse in public housing and the detrimental impact on families that the welfare state imposes. Often, anti-poverty and safety net programs are measured on intention rather than results. However, many programs create a “benefit cliff” where disincentives to work prevent people from ever becoming self-reliant. The Budget Committee’s goal is to secure and strengthen America’s health, retirement, and economic security programs by enacting policies that expand choices, provide flexibility, promote innovation, encourage self-sufficiency, and foster competition.
