Putting American Workers First

American workers should come first in their own country. Employers should not be able to use an outdated law to bypass protections designed to give qualified Americans a fair opportunity to compete for jobs.

That is why I introduced the Protecting American Workers Through H-1B Modernization Act. Senator Jon Husted of Ohio has introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

Under current law, employers classified as H-1B dependent must meet additional requirements to recruit American workers before hiring certain H-1B workers. However, an exemption allows them to bypass those protections when an H-1B worker earns at least $60,000 annually or holds a qualifying advanced degree.

That salary threshold has remained unchanged since 1998. There is no excuse for leaving it frozen for nearly three decades while American wages and living costs have risen. Washington’s failure to act exposes a glaring loophole that the Establishment has shown no interest in fixing, which would help American workers.

My bill would replace the fixed $60,000 threshold with a standard equal to twice the Social Security Administration’s National Average Wage Index, bringing it to roughly $140,000 and allowing it to keep pace with wage growth.

Qualified American workers deserve a fair chance at these jobs. I will continue working to close loopholes that put them at a disadvantage and ensure our immigration policies serve the interests of American workers.

Know Before You Vote

Election day is around the corner, and I encourage every eligible voter in Wisconsin’s Sixth Congressional District to make a plan to vote.

Wisconsin gives voters several options, whether you prefer to vote on Election Day, vote absentee by mail, or cast an absentee ballot in person before Election Day. Taking a few minutes now to make sure you are registered and know when and where you can vote can help make the process easier.

Key dates to remember:

October 20 — Early voting begins
October 29 — Deadline to request an absentee ballot
November 1 — Last day of early voting
November 3 — Election Day

Before election day, I recommend visiting https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/. You can use the site to check your registration, update your information, find your polling place, see what will be on your ballot, and get information about voting absentee or in person before Election Day.

If you plan to vote absentee, don't wait until the last minute. Your ballot must be received by your municipal clerk by 8:00 p.m. CT on Election Day.

Voting is an important responsibility. Make your plan now, know your deadlines, and be ready to make your voice heard on November 3.

The Sheboygan Marsh is one of the most beautiful and pristine parts of Wisconsin. I joined Ducks Unlimited this week to see how their conservation efforts are helping to keep it that way and how I can continue to work in Congress to ensure federal dollars are being spent wisely to keep our vital natural resources and environment safe and clean for everyone to enjoy.

It was great to visit DSG Supply in Sheboygan and learn more about their employee-owned business, their operations, and the important role they play in supplying the products and services that help keep businesses and communities moving forward.

I was glad to join the Oshkosh Chamber to give a legislative update on the work we have accomplished in Washington to reduce taxes for working Americans, protect citizens from spikes in energy costs, and bring more good-paying jobs back to Wisconsin.

Haven is a small community in Sheboygan County. I enjoyed speaking with residents and the firefighters who keep them safe at their brat fry last weekend.

St. Katherine Drexel School's 8th graders hosted a wonderful event to support the school earlier this month. It's great to see young people engaging in community events and ensuring their schools remain strong 💪

I enjoyed meeting with the Institute of Internal Auditors’ Fox Valley Chapter to discuss data privacy, AI risks, and strengthening internal oversight of artificial intelligence. As AI becomes more widespread, strong oversight, clear standards, and protecting Americans’ personal information are essential to managing emerging risks and ensuring responsible innovation.
