IRS Updates

In March, Congress passed the CARES Act to provide relief to Americans affected by COVID-19, which included a provision that authorized the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to send direct payments to individuals who may be financially strained by the current state of the economy, called Economic Impact Payments (EIP). Please see below for the latest IRS updates regarding your EIP and the 2020 tax season:

  • Click here to find out if you are eligible for an EIP. Low-income individuals are eligible.
  • If you are not required to file taxes, use the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info tool to register for your EIP. You should not use this tool if you already filed or are required to file a 2018 or 2019 tax return.
  • The IRS is adding 3,500 telephone representatives to answer your EIP questions. While the most frequently asked EIP questions and answers can be found here, you may find additional assistance by calling 800-919-9835.
  • In March, the IRS launched The People First Initiative to provide taxpayers with COVID-19-related hardships compliance relief. Find answers to your questions regarding The People First Initiative by clicking here.
  • The IRS just started accepting 2021 Low Income Taxpayer Clinic grants. For more information on eligibility and how to apply, please click here.
  • As you may know, the April 15 tax deadline was extended to July 15. Having said that, it is still best to complete your taxes too early rather than too late. I encourage you to take advantage of the IRS’ Free File tool to assist you with your taxes.

Should you have any additional questions throughout the tax filing season, the IRS is available to answer your questions 24/7. Simply click here to access the IRS's Interactive Tax Assistant or check out irs.gov/help/ita. As always, my office is here to help you find the resources you need as we work through the 2020 tax season.

COVID-19 Update for Veterans

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has been helping our brave veterans throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. VA Secretary Robert Wilkie sent Members of Congress this report, detailing the Department's work during this crisis, which I want to share with you. I commend the VA for their diligent efforts during COVID-19 to ensure our veterans are well-cared for and informed. I look forward to supporting the VA in their continued care for our nation’s veterans.

Thursday evening, I spoke with Wisconsin members of Concerned Veterans for America about what Congress is doing to help veterans during the COVID-19 outbreak and how VA medical centers are adapting to continue serving their communities.

Weekly Roundup
The health and well-being of the Great Lakes is of paramount importance to Wisconsin’s Sixth District, which covers about 90 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan. This week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) appointed members to the newly formed Great Lakes Advisory Board. I am glad that the Trump Administration and the EPA are recognizing the importance of the Great Lakes and look forward to working with the Board to keep our waters healthy as both natural resources and vital economic drivers for America. Click here to read the EPA press release.

This week I visited Curt G. Joa, Inc., a Sheboygan Falls manufacturer of the machines that make N95 respirators and pleated facemasks. I was honored to meet and thank their great employees who have been working overtime to provide our country with PPE during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Thursday was National Cheese Day. I am proud to represent Wisconsin's Sixth District, home to some of Wisconsin’s finest cheese makers. I hope you had a gouda time celebrating!

June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month. I hope you’ll join me in raising awareness for PTSD to help combat the stigma against this serious mental health problem that affects so many, including hundreds of thousands of our nation’s brave veterans and active duty soldiers.

On Tuesday, President Trump issued an executive order that will promote religious freedom throughout the world. I thanked our President  for prioritizing religious freedom because everyone on earth deserves to practice their faith freely. Read more about the executive order by clicking here.
