Right to Try Goes to President
I have been working to bring "Right to Try" legislation to the House floor for quite some time.

"Right to Try" will allow terminally ill patients who have exhausted all other treatment options the opportunity to try medications that have passed basic Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety protocols, but have not received final approval for public use. The law will not require any individual to participate in the program, but instead give those with no other options one last chance.

Finally, the House and Senate have both passed "Right to Try". Now, this bill that the President endorsed in his State of the Union address sits on his desk to be signed

"Right to Try" was introduced by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), is a big win for American health care. To me, voting for this bill was easy. It was important to stand up to the pharmaceutical industry that opposed this bill and make sure that those with terminal illnesses have the access to these treatments that could save lives and potentially reveal cures to major diseases.

Overdue Relief for Community Banks
This week, the House passed some much needed relief for community banks. I was proud to vote in favor of S. 2155, the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act. This bill keeps Washington and Wall Street accountable, while giving American families the tools needed to maintain financial independence and plan for the future.

The Dodd-Frank banking reform law passed in 2010 has created an environment in which community banks are ‘too small to succeed’. Our local, community banks are drowning in government compliance and shutting their doors because they can’t afford to sort through the often-times overlapping regulations forced onto them by Dodd-Frank.

People are paying more for their loans. They can’t get refinancing after balloon loans, which is particularly damaging to Wisconsin’s farmers. One-size-fits-all regulations are causing our young people not to be able to get loans to buy houses or start businesses, as well as initiating unnecessary appraisals and driving up the costs of refinancing loans.

The Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act will make great strides in freeing up community banks to focus on what’s most important: fulfilling the needs of their customers, making small-business loans and growing our local economies.

NDAA
Today the House voted in a bipartisan manner to pass the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019.

The NDAA authorizes more funding in support of our military, including funds for additional aircraft, ships and vehicles, as well as pay raises for our troops and increased defense measures for our allies.

While the NDAA isn't perfect, it will work towards making our military more efficient and our troops safer.

On Tuesday, I met with Oshkosh High School Student, Hunter. He is learning Arabic through the State Department's National Security Language Initiative for Youth. It was a pleasure to speak with this smart young man with such a bright future!

Our servicemen and women sacrifice so much for our freedom. That is why it was an honor to help the USO make care packages for our troops overseas. Thanks to all the troops keeping America safe!

My staff and I spent Foster Youth Shadow Day with Ashley, a bright, hardworking young lady who grew up in foster care. Her devotion to helping today’s foster youth is truly inspiring!

It was great to see UW-Madison Chancellor Becky Blank for a meeting in my D.C. office!
