This week, Congress passed H.R. 88, the Retirement, Savings, and Other Tax Relief Act. This legislation includes a number of changes to the federal tax code. The bill proposes retirement and education savings enhancements, provisions to restructure the Internal Revenue Service, and further suspends the Affordable Care Act’s medical device tax and health insurer tax. Additionally, H.R. 88 provides temporary tax relief for victims of the wildfires in California and for communities impacted by Hurricanes Florence and Michael. The disaster-related tax relief also applies to states affected by severe storms and tornadoes this past summer, including Wisconsin.
This bill includes a number of important provisions that will benefit the people of the Sixth District and residents throughout the country. Providing relief to the communities affected by the severe storms that swept through Wisconsin this past summer is very important, as a number of counties in the district were affected. Additionally, those in other states who suffered greatly as a result of the hurricanes earlier this year remain in need. H.R. 88 will help these individuals recover by providing disaster-related tax relief.
Other important provisions of the bill include the suspension of the medical device tax and health insurer tax (HIT). The health insurer tax, which was previously scheduled for reinstatement in 2020, would drastically drive up health care premiums and limit a patients ability to pay treatment costs. H.R. 88 suspends this tax for both 2020 and 2021, protecting patients from burdensome premium increases. I look forward to seeing the benefits H.R. 88 brings to the people of the Sixth District and throughout Wisconsin. |
This week, I joined my colleagues in crafting a bipartisan letter to USDA Secretary, Sonny Perdue, urging him to prioritize relief to cranberry growers while retaliatory tariffs are still in place, as the Department has done for other producers. While other commodities, including specialty crops such as almonds and cherries received direct payments in the tariff relief package, the relief provided to the cranberry industry was limited.
The cranberry industry serves as an important source of agricultural production for several states across the country, especially Wisconsin. Wisconsin's cranberry industry represents the state's leading fruit crop in both acreage and value. Therefore, it is crucial that the cranberry industry is taken into account when determining relief levels for crop producers throughout the country.
Providing temporary assistance to the cranberry industry in the United States will allow growers and processors to adjust to the adverse market conditions and maintain production levels while we modernize our country's trade policies in order to level out the global playing field. |

It was a picturesque Wisconsin day at B&B Metals in Newton, where this local business showed me how they recycle metal scraps.
I had a great time touring and speaking with the residents of Felician Village in Manitowoc about ways Congress can lower health care costs, while protecting Medicare and Social Security.
