The committee met on Wednesday to discuss how we can improve the Social Security Disability Insurance program. While this program was originally designed to provide assistance to older workers who might have a disability preventing them from working, this program has expanded to a large number of claimants. While I believe this program does genuinely help people, there are also many cases of fraud and abuse that need to be dealt with. The Government Accountability Office just revealed that disabled workers were overpaid by $11 billion. We need to ask how we can reform the administrative operations at the Social Security Administration and also how we can prevent fraud and abuse within the program. When flying, many passengers experience long lines to get through airport security. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is tasked with making sure we all fly safely. With recent missteps by TSA, new leadership is now in place. During an Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing this week members questioned the new administrator, Peter Neffenger. Members discussed mitigating risks to passengers, and overhauling the passenger security screening system to address security gaps. Americans should be confident that TSA is doing everything they can to make getting through security at the airport efficient, while also protecting those who are flying.
