Committee Assignments
This week, I learned that I will retain my seat on the Education and Labor Committee as well as the Oversight and Reform Committee. I am very excited that I will once again have the opportunity to promote meaningful changes on these prestigious committees.

Last Congress, under Republican control, we made great progress in the Education and Labor Committee. Our work to improve and modernize the career and technical education system to better fit the needs of today’s students is highly important to me. The Sixth District has more manufacturing jobs than any other, so it is critically important that we provide the next generation of skilled workers with the tools they need for the good, high-paying skilled jobs of tomorrow. I look forward to working with my bipartisan colleagues to continue our important work and help provide more educational and employment opportunities to the great people of the Sixth District and the United States.

In the Oversight and Reform Committee, I look forward to rejoining my colleagues to protect transparency within the federal government and represent the Sixth District. I have always been committed to ensuring our government works for the people in the most efficient way possible. I have a good relationship with returning members, such as incoming Chairman, Elijah Cummings (D-MD), and Ranking Member Jim Jordan (R-OH).

End Government Shutdowns Act
This week, I introduced the End Government Shutdowns Act along with Representative Dave Loebsack (D-IA). This bipartisan bill aims to avoid future government shutdowns in order to ensure the federal government will always work for the people and our federal employees never have to go without pay.

Under the End Government Shutdowns Act, if Congress fails to fund the government, an automatic continuing resolution (CR) will be activated that will fund the government at the previous year’s levels, preventing all future shutdowns. This bill will not only instill economic stability and promote a more purposeful budgetary process, but it will also provide peace of mind to federal employees throughout the United States.

The state government of Wisconsin has had this in place since 1953. As a state legislator, I participated in budget negotiations firsthand and under these rules, the state budget always gets completed and we have never had a shutdown. This legislation will bring a bipartisan approach to the funding process and will help eliminate shutdowns for good.

H.R. 672
This week, I cosponsored H.R. 672, which will defer federal employees’ federally owned student loan payments until after a government shutdown ends. H.R. 672 will allow employees with federally owned student loans to delay repayment of the debt until after the government reopens. After the government reopens, employees may enter into an optional reimbursement period similar to the length of the shutdown.

I am committed to supporting federal employees and I believe they should be paid on their regular pay schedule. This bill is critically important to the thousands of federal employees who have federal student loans and I am proud to cosponsor it with my colleague, Representative Loebsack (D-IA).

Weekly Roundup

This week, I went to the Arizona-Mexico border with a group of fellow Congressmen. In Nogales, we spoke with border security agents who stressed the importance of expanding the wall.

Meet Sadie and her husband Stan. Sadie is Deputy District Director in my FDL office who recently earned the Young Professionals of FDL Future Five Award. I’m so proud of her and grateful to have such an extraordinary staff!

It’s always a pleasure to see fellow Wisconsinites in D.C.! This week, I was able to chat with Sheboygan mayor, Mike Vandersteen.
