The Biden administration's failed border policies have resulted in over 11 million illegal migrants being released into the United States, including individuals with serious criminal histories. This policy failure tragically contributed to the death of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered on February 22, 2024. Her killer, Jose Ibarra, illegally entered the U.S. in 2022, was apprehended by Border Patrol, and was subsequently released due to the administration's misuse of parole authority. Despite multiple arrests in sanctuary cities and repeated failures to appear in court, Ibarra was allowed to remain in the country.
In response, the House of Representatives this week passed the Laken Riley Act as the first bill of the 119th Congress. This legislation will make it possible for more criminal illegal migrants to be detained by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) until deportation. Additionally, this legislation empowers state Attorneys General to take legal action against DHS if the agency's failure to detain or deport illegal aliens results in physical or financial harm to their residents.
The Laken Riley Act represents a decisive step toward addressing systemic failures that have jeopardized public safety and undermined immigration enforcement. By requiring DHS to fulfill its obligation to detain and deport criminal illegal aliens, this legislation prioritizes the security of American communities and upholds the rule of law. Congress must act swiftly to prevent further tragedies and ensure accountability in our immigration system.
A strong nation upholds its laws, especially when it comes to securing our borders and keeping our citizens safe!
