H.R. 271
Last week, I signed on as a cosponsor to H.R. 271, the No Work Without Pay Act. Introduced by Representative Mo Brooks (R-AL), H.R. 271 will ensure that the roughly 420,000 federal employees who are required to work during a federal government shutdown receive their full pay in a timely manner. I have urged House leadership to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote so that we can get our federal workers the paychecks they deserve on their regular pay schedule.

During the government shutdown, federal employees are treated in two different ways. Workers are either furloughed, meaning sent home without pay until the government reopens, or federal workers (such as TSA, border patrol agents, air traffic controllers, Coast Guard and correctional officers) are ordered to work without timely pay or even the guarantee of getting paid. Currently 380,000 federal workers have been furloughed while roughly 420,000 other federal employees are working without pay.

I am a strong supporter of federal workers and I believe it is immoral to force people to work with no guarantee of getting paid. For this reason, I have requested the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives to withhold my pay until a deal is reached and the government reopens. As one of the twelve cosponsors of H.R. 271, I have called on Speaker Pelosi to bring this legislation to the House floor for a vote so that federal workers can receive the compensation they deserve.

Sanctuary Cities
This week, I introduced the Ending Sanctuary Cities Act. This bill would put more pressure on states to follow federal laws by making them choose between receiving federal grant money and continuing to unlawfully harbor illegal immigrants.

The Secretary of Homeland Security would be required to submit delinquent jurisdictions to Congress. Additionally, individual law enforcement officers in these “sanctuary cities” will be protected from discharge or discrimination from any state or local government.

Sanctuary cities impede our ability to keep our country and its citizens safe and secure. Allowing sanctuary cities to exist is a perfect example of an immigration system that is not working for the citizens of the United States. It is time we held states accountable for disobeying federal immigration laws and harboring illegal immigrants who sometimes turn out to be criminals themselves, posing a threat to American citizens.

Weekly Roundup
Throwback to last year’s March For Life. I will always fight on behalf of the most vulnerable among us. This week, in honor of the annual March for Life, I spoke on the House floor about the shameful history of legalizing abortion in America and stressed the importance of protecting human life. Click here to watch my speech. https://cs.pn/2AQ8vHn

It’s always a pleasure to see fellow Wisconsinites in DC. My good friend, Mike Ansay, stopped by to say hi and go on a tour of the Capitol earlier this week.

Glad I was able to make it to the Laconia Jazz Band Chili Luncheon at the high school!
