With the fall weather approaching and school starting again, I’d like to wish all of the students heading back to school this week a safe and productive year. Congress is back in session this week as well, and it was busy with committee hearings and a visit from the United Service Organization (USO). House members were invited to make packages to send to our troops serving overseas.

Budget Committee
The House Budget Committee held its first hearing focused on the committee's Restoring the Trust for All Generations initiative. The Budget Committee highlighted the challenges America's younger generations are facing along with the serious obstacles facing the nation's health, retirement, and economic security programs. The hearing's panel included witnesses who were all under the age of 35. They discussed how their generation of new leaders and entrepreneurs are ready and able to apply innovative solutions to make government work more efficiently and effectively for all Americans. Oversight and Government Reform Committee
On Tuesday, we held a hearing to examine the serious security problems along the U.S.-Mexico border and in the vicinity of U.S. consulates in northern Mexico. The hearing examined the impact of our security problems on the safety of U.S. personnel on our southern border. Improving our border security in the Mexican cities where U.S. facilities are located is crucial to ensuring the protection of American personnel and the many U.S. citizens who visit our consulates daily. The risk posed to U.S. personnel by drug cartel violence in northern Mexico is well known. Click on this link to watch the full hearing.

In a hearing on Thursday, we heard testimony about the mismanagement of the Army Fee Assistance program and analyzed solutions to make the program more efficient and less burdensome on Army families. Listen to the testimony by clicking here.

Around the Capitol
This week, I had the privilege to speak at the In Defense of Christians conference in Washington. I encouraged those in attendance to continue working with members of congress and others in leadership to ensure America continues to protect Christians and religious freedom here and around the world.

The USO was in the Rayburn House Office Building this week where House members were packaging hygiene kits for our troops. Thanks to all of our troops serving overseas, including our own Ryan Croft who is part of my legislative staff in Washington. Ryan deploys to the Middle East this month, and I look forward to his safe return.
