Wisconsin Is Paying the Price for the Government Shutdown

The government has now been shut down for 25 days, and every day that passes, more is at stake for Wisconsin families, communities, and our economy.

House Republicans did our job. On September 19, we voted to keep the government open with a clean funding bill that fully supports essential services and keeps our country running.

This is the same bipartisan funding bill Senate Democrats supported thirteen times under President Biden. The only difference now is politics. They refuse to work with President Trump and are putting partisanship ahead of the American people.

If this continues, hardworking Wisconsinites will pay the price. Each week this shutdown drags on, Wisconsin’s economy loses roughly $234 million in GDP — nearly $1 billion every month. Over 30,000 federal workers in our state are either furloughed or working without pay. After 30 days, nearly 689,000 Wisconsinites, including 267,000 children, will feel the impact through delays and disruptions to programs like SNAP and Wisconsin’s FoodShare, which provide critical nutrition assistance to families in need. On top of that, consumer spending is projected to fall by $295 million each month, hurting small businesses and local communities across our state.

These are real consequences for real people, all because Senate Democrats continue to block the House-passed plan to responsibly reopen the government.

It's time to put our hardworking American families first and end this unnecessary shutdown.

Do you think Senate Democrats should stop blocking the House’s clean funding bill so Wisconsin workers can get paid and families can access essential services?

Protecting Wisconsin’s Children Starts with Accountability

I joined my Republican colleagues in the Wisconsin Congressional Delegation in sending a letter to Governor Tony Evers regarding more than 200 undisclosed cases involving Wisconsin teachers, aides, substitutes, and administrators accused of sexual misconduct.

Under then–DPI Superintendent Tony Evers and current Superintendent Jill Underly, these cases were kept hidden from the public. It’s shocking and deeply disturbing that parents and communities were denied transparency about such serious allegations involving individuals who worked closely with our children.

Reports also show that when the Department of Public Instruction was first alerted to potential misconduct by these educators, it devoted few resources to investigate and failed to properly track or share critical information. In many cases, DPI allowed the accused to quietly surrender their teaching licenses rather than face a full investigation.

Wisconsin’s parents, students, and communities deserve better. Our schools must be places of trust and accountability, not secrecy and cover-ups.

This week, I attended the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber Community Awards Dinner, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the individuals and businesses making a lasting impact in our community each and every day. I’m grateful for their hard work, leadership, and community spirit.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Campbellsport School District to see some of the impressive things our students are accomplishing here in Wisconsin’s Sixth District. We discussed important topics such as school finance, state and federal funding, vouchers, special education, and career pathways for students. I’m thankful to the board members and administrators who took the time to have these thoughtful conversations.

I toured Reliable Knitting Works in Campbellsport, a company that designs, distributes, and sources headwear, footwear, and accessories for a variety of retailers. Their innovation and commitment to quality help drive Wisconsin’s economy and showcase the best of what our local businesses have to offer.
