Non-Citizens on Welfare?

This week, I reintroduced legislation that will strengthen social safety net programs and ensure their availability for U.S. citizens by preventing non-citizens from receiving federal welfare benefits, including Social Security and Medicare—the Safeguarding Benefits for Americans Act.

The CATO Institute, a non-profit think-tank, has estimated this legislation would save taxpayers $60 billion in the first year alone. This bill doesn't just lower the financial burden of immigration, it also has the potential to renew Americans' confidence in our immigration and welfare systems.

Currently, illegal migrants are accessing benefits that are intended for U.S. citizens. This is serving as one more incentive for individuals to cross our border illegally. Since taking office, President Biden has advocated for a progressive open-border agenda, resulting in a staggering 8.7 million illegal border crossings nationwide.

The influx of illegal migrants through our southern border surpasses the population of 36 states—including Wisconsin—which is overwhelming Border Patrol, American cities, and putting American citizens at risk.

This crisis is not a coincidence or due to any action taken by Congress. President Biden and his Administration have made over 60 decisions that have weakened our border security, such as halting the construction of the border wall system and eliminating the Remain in Mexico policy.

The Safeguarding Benefits for Americans Act will ensure benefits are available for U.S. citizens by decreasing the likelihood that people will cross into our country illegally in search of handouts. I want to give every immigrant a hand-up instead of a hand-out so they too can share the dignity that comes with an honest day’s work, just like my ancestors had when they came to this country.

Exposed Failures in Foreign Aid Distribution

This week, the subcommittee I chair focusing on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs held a hearing. The focus was on evaluating the Biden Administration’s mishandling of the distribution of U.S. foreign aid, lacking accountability measures and vetting controls, and the weaponization of the aid to force countries to adapt to the Administration’s extreme agenda.

During this hearing I highlighted the need for mechanisms to oversee how American taxpayer dollars are being spent on foreign assistance. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State Department lack comprehensive accountability mechanisms for tracking foreign support once it departs the United States. Contractors and grantees are rarely vetted to make sure foreign assistance is not ending up in the hands of bad actors. The U.S. is over $34 trillion in debt and it is unacceptable that we are sending money oversees without sufficient safeguards.

We also cannot continue to ignore the allegations of political abuse surrounding the Biden Administration's use of foreign aid. Our current aid distribution apparatus has been used by the Biden Administration to pour taxpayer dollars into foreign countries and international organizations that support the administration’s radical agenda overseas. Most concerning is that the Administration sometimes conditions receipt of the aid on whether the country follows the Biden Administration’s extreme social policies.

Oversight of foreign assistance is not merely a matter of fiscal responsibility, but a

reflection of U.S. strategic goals. Through this hearing my colleagues and I gained valuable insight to end this misuse of taxpayer money.
