Education and the Workforce Committee |
Earlier this week, Speaker Ryan moved forward on reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act by naming a conference committee. I was named as a conferee, along with nine other Republican House members. The House Education and Workforce Committee has worked hard to strengthen and reform education this year – putting power back in the hands of parents, administrators and local officials. America’s next generation deserves a quality education. On Thursday, the conference committee came to an agreement to replace No Child Left Behind. The bill will now go back to the House and Senate for final approval. Click here to learn more.
During the conference meetings I urged fellow committee members to support an amendment I introduced to keep funding at current levels until 2020. Read more here.

I called on President Obama this week to immediately halt his Syrian refugee program until the United States Intelligence Community can guarantee the program does not pose any threats to our national security. The safety of American citizens is my number one priority. It is clear that Obama’s refugee program does not have the proper tools or the necessary background information to distinguish legitimate Syrian refugees from Islamic State terrorists.
President Obama stood by his plans to allow as many as 100,000 Syrian refugees to relocate to the United States in the coming years. The tragic terrorist attack committed by Muslim extremists in Paris should be a wake-up call to the United States. Click here to read my full statement.
The House passed the legislation yesterday to protect America from potential terrorists. Read my statement on the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act of 2015. |
Oversight and Government Reform Committee |
This week, the committee discussed the vulnerabilities of the Department of Education student loan database. The U.S. Department of Education is responsible for managing the portfolio of over 40 million federal student loan borrowers who hold over $1.18 trillion in outstanding debt obligations. In the committee, we discussed the ways that the Department of Education needs to increase their security of this private information. Every precaution should be taken to protect American students’ private data. Click here to watch the hearing. |
The hearing this week focused much of our attention on the Congressional budgeting process. The current budget system is outdated and quite cumbersome, resulting in a poor budgeting process that is eroding our ability to successfully govern. We have to move to a different way of budgeting in Washington that is more easily understood and allows Congress to be more efficient and effective. On Wednesday, we discussed the topic of biennial budget, which would require Congress to operate a budget for two-year periods. This is just one of a few ideas to get our nations fiscal house in order. Click here to watch the hearing.
