The Year of Tax Reform
Tuesday was the deadline to file your taxes, did you get them in on time?

The bad news is that the old tax law was still lingering up until Tuesday, so taxes you just filed for 2017 still fall under the outdated system.

The good news is that you won't ever have to worry about that old system again! Wisconsinites have already been seeing larger paychecks thanks to tax reform. And now, the next time you file your taxes, it will be under the modern rules of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was written with middle class families in mind.

If you have any stories about how #TaxReform has or will put more money in your pocket, let me know by sending an email through my website or writing me on Facebook (RepGrothman), Twitter (@RepGrothman) or Instagram (RepGlennGrothman).

IRS Oversight
Speaking of taxes,The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, of which I am a member, held a hearing on Tuesday to look into one of the concerning issues at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Each year, thousands of people call into the IRS to ask questions about how to best complete the forms required to correctly file their taxes. In years passed, according to an IRS employee at this hearing, the information given to these citizens is wrong about 60 percent of the time! To fix this astounding shortcoming, the IRS decided to be even less helpful and reduce the scope of questions they will answer, simply to report better numbers.

It is unacceptable for an agency to require hard-working Americans to wade through paperwork that they can't even understand!

That is why I questioned Acting IRS Commissioner J.David Kautter, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, J. Russell George and IRS National Taxpayer Advocate, Nina Olson on the root of their prolems and ways we can work together to fix them in order to better complete what we came to Washington to do, serve the American people.

ICYMI: Right to Try
I have been trying to bring "Right to Try" legislation to the House floor for quite some time. This issue was brought to my attention by people in my district with loved ones willing to try new treatments still in the approval process, but were being held up by the slow turning wheel of the FDA.

"Right to Try" will allow terminally ill patients who have exhausted all other treatment options the opportunity to try medications that have passed basic Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety protocols, but have not received final approval for public use. The law will not require any individual to participate in the program, but instead give those with no other options one last chance.

Finally, after several conversations with my friend, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR), the House passed "Right to Try" legislation with bipartisan support!

This bill, originally introduced by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), is a big win for Amerian health care. To me, voting for this bill was easy. It was important to stand up to the pharmaceutical industry that opposed this bill and make sure that those with terminal illnesses have the access to these treatments that could save lives and potentially reveal cures to major diseases.

Wisconsin in D.C.
I am so proud to be from a state with so many outstanding people who make their voices known on both the local and national level. Thanks to everyone who took the time to meet with me this week!

I had a blast visiting with students from Kiel High School. I’m so glad they could make the trip through the Close Up Foundation and look forward to seeing the great things the future holds for them!

An issue important to me is how to best equip our firefighters to perform their service and keep them safe. I spoke with Pierce Manufacturing and Oshkosh Corportation about how Wisconsin Manufacturing can help.

The Wiscosnin Restaurant Association gave me some food for thought when they visited my office to discuss regulations affecting the food service industry.

This week, the Wisconsin Council of Military Officers Association of America “stormed the hill” to discuss the military and veterans issues.

Thanks to the Independent Insurance Agents of Wisconsin for the insurance industry update!

It was great to see all of the Wisconsinites at the Ducks Unlimited Dinner, where we discussed conservation and the best ways to preserve our beautiful landscapes and natural resources.
