My Bill to Help Reopening of Alcatraz

This week, I reintroduced the BOP Direct-Hire Authority Act, which will alleviate the severe staffing shortages at the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facilities nationwide. This legislation will allow the BOP to make hiring decisions on their own, cutting through the bureaucratic red tape of Washington and enhancing the safety and security of Corrections Officers.

President Donald Trump recently called for the reopening of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary to house our country's most dangerous offenders, underscoring the growing concern that our federal prison system is overwhelmed and understaffed. One of his biggest hurdles in reopening Alcatraz will be quickly hiring much-needed Correctional Officers. This legislation will help improve that process to ensure Alcatraz meets staffing needs and safety requirements.

Back in Wisconsin, I have toured the Federal Correctional Institution in Oxford and regularly receive feedback from its employees concerned about the staffing crisis that has devastated Oxford and other BOP facilities and personnel across the nation.

Education and Workforce Subcommittee Hearing on OSHA Overreach

On Thursday, the Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Workforce Protections held a hearing to examine the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) overreach and how the Trump administration can restore the agency's focus on promoting workplace safety without burdensome red tape.

Education and Workforce Republicans support common-sense policies that protect workers and respect employers. Wisconsin's Sixth District is the largest manufacturing district in the nation. Our manufacturers deserve to operate in a safe environment, without being smothered by top-down mandates from Washington.

Under the Biden administration, OSHA relied on outdated, one-size-fits-all regulations that don't reflect today's workforce or the realities on the ground. These policies burden both employers and employees alike without vastly improving safety.

We'll continue our oversight of OSHA's regulatory proposals to ensure that it's fulfilling its mission of keeping workers safe without creating excessive overreach.

National Police Week

This week, we paused to honor the brave men and women of law enforcement who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. Their courage and commitment are the backbone of a strong and just society.

We remembered the fallen, stood with their families, and expressed our deep gratitude to those who continue to serve. Thank you to every officer who answers the call -- you are true heroes.

On Tuesday, I joined Speaker Mike Johnson and my House Republican colleagues at a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to those who have fallen in the line of duty, including the more than 24,000 names engraved at the National Law Enforcement Memorial. Each name is a story of service and sacrifice.

I was especially moved to reflect on the story of Trevor Casper, a fallen state trooper from Wisconsin's Sixth District. In 2015, Trevor was killed in the line of duty on his first day as a state trooper. Even on his first day of the job, he made the ultimate sacrifice to protect those around him. His courage speaks to the kind of person he was. I carry his story with me, and I will continue to honor his legacy and the legacy of all our fallen heroes.

Weekly Roundup

I had the pleasure of meeting Education Secretary Linda McMahon. She’s cleaning up years of waste, fraud, and abuse in the Department of Education, and putting students, families, and educators first.

I’m grateful for her dedication to making our schools a place where students can learn and thrive.

It was great meeting with Mercury Marine this week! Based in Fond Du Lac, Mercury Marine is the world's leading manufacturer of recreational marine propulsion engines, adding strength to Wisconsin’s manufacturing industry.

I’m proud to support Wisconsin’s hardworking manufacturers in Washington.

I loved seeing the redbud trees in full bloom at Mequon's First Annual Redbud Festival last week.

The event celebrated the Mequon-Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club’s Redbud Project - an initiative that began in 2011 with a vision to bring springtime beauty to the Riverwalk and Town Center, inviting both locals and visitors to enjoy this vibrant season in Wisconsin's Sixth District.

I kicked off National EMS Week by supporting the Oakfield Fire Department and enjoying great food, great company, and a fun cash raffle.

Thank you to the Department for all that you do. It was an honor to join you last week.
