Highway 23 Expansion

I want to start this week’s newsletter with some great news. I have been pushing for the expansion of Highway 23 between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan for years. This week, we have finally broken ground on this important project that is long overdue and will save lives! The highway will be expanded into four lanes and is projected to be finished in 2022.

This week the House was in session, so while I was working in Washington, my District Director, Alan, was there to represent the Sixth District.

Crisis at Our Border
If illegal immigrant apprehensions continue at current levels, the United States is on track to see total year apprehensions at approximately 600,000, a level the United States has not experienced since the George W. Bush administration. To say there is not a crisis at our southwest border is irresponsible and compromises our national security. Congress needs to address our immigration crisis now.

That is why I took to the House Floor to address the crisis at our Southern border.

Wage Growth
Last week, the April jobs report was released. Our economy again beat expectations by adding 263,000 new jobs and the lowest levels of unemployment since before we put a man on the moon.

This week, we have another indicator of our strong economy - significant wage growth. Average hourly earnings are 3.2 percent higher than they were a year ago. That's nearly a $1,300 increase in pay for an employee earning $40,000 per year.

The biggest winners of this news are the lowest 25 percent of earners, who received over a 4 percent wage increase from this time last year.
