Honoring Our Veterans
This past weekend, my D.C. office teamed up with the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight organization and the Dream Foundation to welcome Vietnam veteran and WI resident, Lou Dehnert, to Washington to pay his respects at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Lou is terminally ill and previously had not visited Washington, D.C. He has always wanted to see the memorial to give one last goodbye to his friends with whom he served courageously. Lou served in Motor Pool Operations in the 528th unit from 1969-72.

My Legislative Director, Ryan Croft, was in attendance to present Lou with his Vietnam Commemoration Pin. His courage, bravery and devotion to his country will never be forgotten.

Honoring our veterans and making sure they receive necessary support is so important to their well-being and legacy. Congress recently passed legislation for government funding that gave the Department of Veteran Affairs its highest level of funding in history. Increased funding will help provide better care for veterans with a wider variety of available resources and benefits.

Opioid Epidemic Relief
The opioid epidemic affects individuals, families and communities throughout the country. This week, we recognize Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week. As a highlight of the week and efforts surrounding the epidemic, the Department of Health and Human Services took a huge step towards combating this crisis by awarding over $1 billion in funding. With this funding, states will be able to adequately address the opioid crisis that, in some way, affects almost every community in our country.

While improvements have been made regarding the epidemic such as an approximately 50% drop in Americans beginning heroin use from 2016 to 2017, and a 21% drop in the amount of opioids prescribed from January 2017 to August of this year, thousands of Americans are still misusing opioids and developing detrimental addictions.

This funding will help promote a 5 point plan the Department of Health and Human Services has been attempting to implement nationwide. For more information on the funding and efforts being made, click here.

District Postal Issues
Earlier this month, the U.S. Postal Service misplaced several thousand pieces of mail intended for delivery to residents from the Neenah and Menasha area in the 6th district.

Although we do not currently have information on the reason for the disappearance of this mail, we are looking into the issue and will do our best to find a solution to the problem. As a member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, I have requested that the committee examine the nature of the missing mail.

If you are a resident who is having issues with lost mail, please reach out to my Fond du Lac office at 920-907-0624.

Weekly Roundup
Last week, I introduced two bills to Congress. One addresses age discrimination in the workforce and the other focuses on allowing workers to deduct work-related expenses from their taxes.

It was an honor to speak at Academy Day in Oshkosh this past weekend.

Grande produces top-notch dairy commodities and provides the community with a great source of employment. It was a pleasure meeting with their representatives and touring their impressive facility.

Great spending time with the individuals from United Way for their kick-off luncheon in Oshkosh, they do amazing work for the community!
