Cutting Red Tape for Retirement Plans

Congressional leaders have a responsibility to ensure federal rules don’t create unnecessary burdens for businesses and individuals alike. That’s why, together with Congressman Donald Norcross, we introduced the Form 5500 Filing Simplification Act, bipartisan legislation designed to modernize and streamline retirement plan reporting.

Under current law, businesses must file Form 5500 each year, and also submit a separate extension request, Form 5558, just to meet the deadline. This redundant two-step process wastes time, costs money, and creates headaches, particularly for small and mid-sized employers.

Our bill fixes that by establishing one uniform filing deadline and allowing electronic submission. It reduces paperwork while maintaining strong oversight, ensuring workers’ retirement benefits stay protected.

Simplifying this process saves businesses time, reduces costs, and keeps the focus where it belongs: safeguarding Americans’ retirement savings. This is common-sense, bipartisan legislation that strengthens the private retirement system.

House Judiciary Hearing: "Europe's Threat to American Speech and Innovation: Part II"

I joined this week's House Judiciary Committee hearing to examine how European laws are impacting Americans’ rights and our businesses. The hearing, “Europe’s Threat to American Speech and Innovation: Part II,” focused on rules like the EU’s Digital Services Act and the UK’s Online Safety Act, which push platforms to censor content, restrict speech, and even limit religious expression online.

I questioned witnesses about how these foreign regulations reach into the United States, forcing American companies to follow European rules or face heavy fines. This isn’t just about business; it’s about an assault on fundamental freedoms. European governments are effectively telling American companies what Americans can say, post, or share, and in some cases targeting religious viewpoints. That undermines our core principles of free speech and religious liberty, and it threatens the ability of Americans to freely express their beliefs online.

It’s critical that we protect Americans’ ability to speak freely, practice their faith, and innovate without being constrained by foreign censorship or mandates.

Protecting Women’s Sports and Fiscal Responsibility

This week, the House Judiciary Committee advanced legislation aimed at protecting women’s athletics and promoting fiscal responsibility.

The Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act would amend the Olympic and Amateur Sports Act to clearly define male, female, and sex. It also prohibits the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee from certifying any national athletics governing body that allows biological males to compete in competitions designated for biological females. This ensures fairness and preserves opportunities for female athletes at every level.

The committee also considered a proposed amendment to the Constitution requiring a balanced federal budget. Our nation faces a $38 trillion debt and spent $1.78 trillion more than it collected last year thanks in large part to the Biden-era spending levels authorized for that fiscal year. This amendment would limit spending to the average of the previous three years’ receipts, excluding borrowed money, while still allowing Congress to respond to wars or emergencies with proper majorities. Any new tax or tax increase would require a two-thirds vote in both chambers, encouraging responsible budgeting and limited government.

These bills show the committee taking steps to protect women’s opportunities in sports and to hold the federal government accountable for its spending.

Do You Support Legislation to Cut Your Taxes and Increase Paychecks?

I am thrilled that Congress passed landmark legislation to deliver historic tax relief for hard-working Wisconsinites this year. Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts, real wages are finally growing faster than prices. I’m working to keep your hard-earned dollars in YOUR POCKET instead of with the Washington bureaucrats.

This pro-growth and pro-America legislation will lower WI taxes through:

  • No tax on tips
  • No tax on overtime
  • Enhanced Child Tax Credit
  • Additional tax deduction for seniors over 65
  • Permanent increased standard deduction
  • Making permanent the middle-class tax cuts from 2017

Weekly Roundup

The Winter Olympic Games kicked off on Friday.

Wisconsin has two athletes competing this year: Deedra Irwin of Pulaski in biathlon and Jordan Stolz of Kewaskum in speedskating.

Both have put in years of work to earn this opportunity, and I wish them success as they represent our state on the world stage.

On Friday, we recognized the birthday of President Ronald Reagan. He believed a strong America depends on freedom, personal responsibility, and a limited federal government that trusts the people.

President Reagan’s leadership strengthened our economy, rebuilt our national defense, and pushed back against the expansion of government. His principles continue to inform conservative policymaking today.

The Working Families Tax Cut didn’t just lower taxes, it made filing easier.

By simplifying the tax code for most Americans and locking in a $31,500 standard deduction, families are spending less time buried in paperwork and keeping more of what they earn.

It was good to attend the Oostburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours at Pine Haven in Oostburg.

Events like this are a great opportunity to hear directly from local business owners, learn what’s working in our communities, and talk about ways Washington can better support small businesses.

Thank you to the Chamber and Pine Haven for hosting.

I recently attended a reception honoring the Congressional Independent Colleges.

It was great to meet leaders from across the country and hear about the important work these schools are doing to educate students and strengthen their communities.

I appreciated the chance to learn more about the challenges they face and the impact they have.
