U.S. Census Bureau Flaws

The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability held a hearing on Thursday to examine issues with the U.S. Census Bureau. During the hearing, it was revealed that the Post-Enumeration Survey, which assesses the accuracy of the Census count, identified significant errors and flaws in the 2020 Census. These miscounts disproportionately benefited Democratic-leaning states, raising concerns about the integrity of the process. It is critical for Congress to fully understand what went wrong to ensure similar errors are not repeated in the 2030 Census.

Ensuring that apportionment is based solely on U.S. citizens is essential to maintaining the integrity of our democratic process. Passing the Equal Representation Act will be a key priority in the 119th Congress. This critical legislation, which passed the House earlier this year, would add a citizenship question to the decennial census and ensure that only citizens are counted for apportioning seats in the House of Representatives and Electoral College votes.

During the hearing, U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Santos admitted that the Bureau uses race-based questions to approach racial groups differently. This raises further concerns about the objectivity and consistency of Census practices. Watch my exchange with Director Santos below.

Trooper Trevor Casper Bill Signed into Law!

Frequent readers of my newsletter may recall that last year I introduced bipartisan legislation to designate the U.S. Post Office located on Fremont Street in Kiel, WI as the “Trooper Trevor J. Casper Post Office Building”. I am happy to share with you that on November 25, President Biden signed my bill to honor Trooper Casper into law!

Trooper Casper’s life was tragically cut short in 2015, making him the youngest police officer in Wisconsin’s history to be killed in the line of duty. Renaming this post office in his honor serves as a lasting tribute to a young man who was unwavering in his commitment to keeping our streets safe.

Trooper Casper's sacrifice reminds us all of the profound debt of gratitude we owe to our law enforcement officers. His heroism and dedication to duty should inspire us to support those who continue to serve and protect our communities across Wisconsin.

I am thankful this legislation has been signed into law and look forward to honoring Trooper Casper’s sacrifice.

Statement on the Passing of David Prosser Jr.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend and former colleague, David Prosser Jr. David was a devoted public servant whose remarkable contributions to Wisconsin have left a lasting legacy that will be felt for generations to come.

During his time as Speaker of the Assembly, David led with fairness, wisdom, and a steady hand. I had the privilege of serving alongside him and saw firsthand his commitment to doing what was right for the people of Wisconsin. His deep understanding of the issues, ability to build consensus, and unwavering commitment to public service earned him the respect of both his colleagues and constituents.

David’s legacy extends beyond the legislature to his time on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, where he brought the same thoughtfulness and dedication to his role as a justice. His years on the bench were marked by his keen intellect, fairness, and respect for the rule of law. To this day when talking to House leadership about how to handle legislation, I use David Prosser as an example.

Wisconsin has lost a true leader, and I have lost a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with David’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. May we honor his memory by striving to emulate his dedication to public service and his commitment to justice.
