Last week, my committees held hearings regarding the massive data breach at the Office of Personnel Management as well as the school lunch program. Keeping the federal government accountable is a top priority for me.

Oversight and Government Reform Committee
This week, we continued questioning officials from the Office of Personnel Management. Some background on the issue if you haven’t been following it:

Earlier this year, officials at OPM found out that there had been cyberattack on federal employee data. Chinese hackers are believed to have stolen the personal information of over 18 million past and present federal employees. This breach is extremely dangerous and points to the fact that our cybersecurity is flawed. Officials at OPM have been negligent in protecting this data and their response has been clearly underwhelming. The director at OPM refuses to take responsibility for the issue, making the distrust of the federal government worse. The personal information of employees should be protected, OPM needs to do better. OPM officials need to address what they are going to do to fix the situation. Watch the hearing here.

The Oversight and Government Reform committee continued to investigate the targeting of conservative groups at the IRS. Officials from the agency testified before the committee, but answered very few questions. These officials need to be held accountable and fully explain why this was allowed to take place. See my questioning in committee here.

Education and The Workforce
I questioned state and local educational officials from around the nation regarding the school nutrition program. Following the 2010 re-authorization of the national school lunch and breakfast programs, the Department of Agriculture issued a number of prescriptive regulations governing what types of food can be served in schools and how often, the maximum number of calories students are allowed to eat per meal, and the price a student must pay per meal. Making a school lunch is not hard, and it should be in the hands of local officials as to what we feed our school children, not Washington bureaucrats. Watch the committee hearing today.

Thanks for taking time to read my Capitol Committee Update! As your Congressman, my staff and I are here to serve you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Fond du Lac and Washington offices.

Sincerely,

Glenn Grothman
United States Representative
