Growing up, AM radio was always a staple in my household. Like countless Wisconsinites, I still rely on it to this day. The importance of accessing AM radio cannot be overstated, particularly for rural Americans. When internet or cell service is unavailable, AM radio is often the first source of information many turn to. AM radio provides timely, reliable information in times of crisis, including alerts and updates for tornadoes, floods, and other local emergencies. Currently, AM radio has over 45 million monthly listeners and its removal may deprive Wisconsinites of crucial, life-saving information.
Recently, I was concerned to learn that Ford and other major car manufacturers announced that they would be removing AM radio transmitters from future vehicles. That is why I joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Congressmen Robert Latta (R-OH) and Greg Pence (R-IN), on a letter to the President of BMW, Ford, Volkswagen, Mazda, Volvo, Tesla, Polestar, Rivian, GM and Mercedes Benz requesting more information regarding their decision to cut ties with AM radio and urging them to reverse course.
I was pleased to see that after receiving our letter, Ford has reversed its decision and will keep AM radio transmitters in new vehicles. I strongly urge other car manufacturers to follow suit and reinstall AM radio in all vehicles they produce. It is a matter of public safety in rural communities.
