Standing up to Attacks on Life

During my service in the Wisconsin Legislature, I authored Wisconsin Act 309. This was a critical piece of legislation in protecting the life and health of women subject to to elective abortions as well as life of the unborn children. Among several other life-saving provisions, my bill instituted a 24 hour waiting period so women could seriously consider what is at stake for the future of their child before jumping right into a life-altering decision without sufficiently thinking it through.

I have spoken with several women who were bullied by their boyfriends or cajoled by their parents into having abortions, and they all feel a waiting period is an extremely important tool for women in crisis to take a step back and reflect. Without it, a woman can go to an abortionist and receive the deadly procedure on-demand. These women and families can never go back once they make that decision, and a waiting period provides everyone involved with an opportunity to consider the ramifications before the life of their child is permanently gone.

I am truly sad to share that yesterday my Democratic colleagues in the House voted almost unanimously in favor of H.R. 3755. This extreme bill will endanger the lives of unborn children all across the country by removing all protections for the unborn at the state level. For example, simple difference-making measures like Wisconsin's 24-hour waiting period will be nullified. Other main points from this heinous legislation include:

  • Imposes abortion on demand until birth.
  • Overrides state pro-life laws on informed consent, parental notification in the case of a minor, prohibits dismemberment abortions, and prohibits abortions based on a Down Syndrome diagnosis, the baby’s sex, when a baby can feel pain, and when the baby’s heartbeat can be detected.
  • Removes all state and federal protections for the unborn at the state and federal level.
  • Under this law, every state will be a late-term abortion state where abortions are performed until birth for any reason with no accountability or protections for women.

This week on the House floor, I expressed my outrage at this grave injustice and stood up for the defenseless.

In addition to this abortion-on-demand legislation passing comfortably by the Majority, what is even more shocking and disturbing is all 220 House Democrats shot down an effort to amend H.R. 3755 to include born alive protections, which ensure that any child born alive during an abortion procedure receives the same degree of professional care to save the life of the child that any other child born alive at the same gestational age would receive.

I will always fight for the issues that matter to you, including protecting life from conception to natural death. We have a moral and civic duty to protect those who are voiceless and defenseless, including unborn children. As an Assemblyman in the Wisconsin Legislature, in addition to introducing and supporting pro-life legislation, I was a proud two-time recipient of Pro-Life Wisconsin’s Legislator of the Year Award. I have and will continue to support legislation that protects the sanctity of all life as I represent you in Congress.

Congressional App Challenge

I am pleased to announce that my office is now accepting submissions for the 2021 Congressional App Challenge. The aim of this competition is to encourage middle and high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications. The Challenge is intended to highlight the value of computer science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.

This competition is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, regardless of coding experience. We strongly encourage students of all skill levels to participate, enabling them to learn how to create their own apps. Students are encouraged to register online and submit their apps by November 1.

Weekly Roundup

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reporting over 200,000 illegal encounters in both July and August shows the growing influence of drug cartels and compromises the safety of migrants, agents, and border communities. Earlier in the week, I took to the House floor to discuss the Biden Border Crisis and the recent developments under the Del Rio bridge.
