Amidst this chaos, I took action to restore the rule of law along the Southern border by voting in favor of H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act. This legislation resumes construction of the border wall system, adds manpower for Border Patrol, protects unaccompanied children from human trafficking, and more.
When migrant children arrive at our border without their parents or another relative, they are placed in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). ORR is then responsible for finding and vetting a sponsor to take in these children. A recent report from the New York Times, however, revealed that 85,000 children have fallen off the radar of the ORR over the last two years. As Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs, I conducted a hearing to hold the ORR accountable for its careless handling of these children. Thankfully, the Secure the Border Act addresses topics we discussed in my Subcommittee hearing and represents a great first step toward ensuring we protect these children.
By passing the Secure the Border Act, my Republican colleagues and I took crucial steps to restore the rule of law along the border, combat illegal immigration, and make our communities safer. Until President Biden becomes serious and works with Congress to support Border Patrol and revive border security, there is little reason to believe this crisis will not continue to escalate.
