Special Edition: The Government Shutdown Explained

Hi there, it's Congressman Grothman.

I know many of you may have questions about the looming government shutdown, and I want to be clear about what’s happening and why. House Republicans did our job. On September 19, we passed a clean, continuing resolution to keep the government open, fully fund essential services, and protect programs that matter to Wisconsinites: Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, WIC, and more. This nonpartisan bill extended funding at current levels through November 21 with no partisan games, just common-sense governance.

I am once again calling on Democrats to join Republicans in voting for legislation to ensure the government remains open before tonight’s deadline. I voted for similar bills in the past to keep the government running, even when I disagreed with President Biden, because a government shutdown complicates people’s lives. In fact, the same type of funding bill was supported by Democrats 13 times under President Biden, many of whom are the ones holding up the funding today.

Unfortunately, some in the Democrat Party support a shutdown simply to oppose President Trump. It’s up to their leaders to put the American people first and prevent this unnecessary crisis.

Let’s be clear about what this is really about:

  • Republicans voted to keep the government open.

  • Democrats are threatening a shutdown to push a $1.5 trillion partisan wish-list: free health care for illegal immigrants, billions for unnecessary climate projects, funding for liberal media outlets, and cuts to rural health care.

This isn’t about programs for families, seniors, or children; it’s about politics. The same type of continuing resolution Democrats supported 13 times under President Biden is now being blocked simply because President Trump is in office.

I will continue fighting to keep government services running, protecting programs for Wisconsinites, and holding Democrats accountable for choices that put our communities at risk. Washington must put Americans first, and Republicans will keep doing our job to make that happen.

I'm Still Here to Work For You

I will remain working and my office will remain open during a shutdown to answer questions, help with casework, and listen to your concerns. However, please note that some casework may be delayed since many federal agencies will have workers furloughed during a shutdown. Even so, my staff and I remain fully committed to assisting you however we can.
