My goal in Washington has and will continue to be to best represent your interests as a resident of Wisconsin’s Sixth Congressional District and fight for a better future for Wisconsin communities, families, and our next generation. Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have been a vocal critic of Washington's addiction to spending and its impact on Wisconsinites.
Unfortunately, over the past year, consumer prices are rising at the most rapid pace Americans have seen since the 1980s. This is extremely problematic because the price for gas, housing, and groceries is taking a toll on the wallets of families and workers. Plus, our national debt has now risen to above $30 trillion for the first time ever and is showing no signs of stopping.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) produces the "CBO Outlook," which projects the federal budget deficit over the next 10 years. At this week’s House Budget Committee hearing, I spoke with Phillip Swagel, CBO Director, about government spending and its implications, as well as his projections for our national debt over the next decade.
The significant increases to our debt and deficit, and subsequent rice in consumer prices, were exacerbated by the excess spending of the President Biden’s $1.9 trillion “COVID relief” bill and the $1 trillion “infrastructure” package he signed into law last November. According to the CBO Outlook, the American Rescue Plan alone contributed over $1.5 trillion to the deficit since the start of 2021.
Now, more than ever, is the time to have serious conversations about the direction of our country. Washington politicians, including President Biden who is still advocating for his “Build Back Better” spending plan, must realize that this kind of reckless spending is unsustainable and will leave our children and grandchildren with a great burden, not to mention adding to the soaring prices of cars, gas, housing, and groceries we are already seeing right now.
