ICYMI: National Marine Sanctuary Advances |
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association this week advanced a proposal to designate an area consisting of 875-square miles from Port Washington to Two Rivers as a possible National Marine Sanctuary.
The Great Lakes play an important role in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. Designating this part of Lake Michigan in the 6th District as a National Marine Sanctuary only confirms our commitment to protecting the Great Lakes. Wisconsin has a great heritage of stewarding marine life, and our environment throughout history. This is a great opportunity for our communities to preserve these environmental treasures for future generations. Read more here.

Oversight and Government Reform Committee |
Recently, I introduced a bill to name the U.S. Post Office located on West 2nd Street in Fond du Lac as the "Lieutenant Colonel James 'Maggie' Megellas Post Office.” Today, my bill passed the Oversight and Government Reform Committee - next stop is the House floor and then to the President’s desk for his signature. Naming this post office after Lt. Col. Megellas will serve as a reminder of his heroic sacrifice.
I also introduced a bill which authorizes and requests President Barack Obama to award Megellas the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military honor, for his courageous actions during the Battle of the Bulge.

Education and the Workforce Committee |
Head Start is a program in the United States that began in 1965 and provides low-income students with opportunities to prepare them for elementary and secondary education. Recently, concerns have been raised regarding the long-term success of the program. In committee this week, we discussed needed reforms to ensure the program is providing students with the tools they need to succeed in the future. During the hearing, I questioned Dr. Nolan over concerns with this program. You can watch my remarks here. |
This week, the Budget Committee passed reconciliation legislation. This is a bill derived from the House-passed Budget earlier this year and is aimed at eliminating harmful portions of Obamacare while also helping reduce the nation’s budget deficit. This fast track procedure helps legislation move through both Houses of Congress faster, so it can move to the President’s desk. I was proud to support this important legislation in the Budget Committee and I look forward to working with my fellow committee members to ensure that the federal budget is on track and we are not saddling future generations with insurmountable debt.
