Washington,
October 6, 2015
(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) released the following statement after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) identified parts of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin as a potential National Marine Sanctuary. According to the NOAA website, an area consisting of 875-square miles from Port Washington to Two Rivers was identified for possible designation as a National Marine Sanctuary.
“The Great Lakes play an important role in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. Designating this part of Lake Michigan in the 6th District as a National Marine Sanctuary only confirms our commitment to protecting the Great Lakes,” said Congressman Grothman. “Wisconsin has a great heritage of stewarding marine life, and our environment throughout history. This is a great opportunity for our communities to preserve these environmental treasures for future generations.” Public comment periods will take place until January 15, 2016. NOAA will draft environmental impact statements, potential regulations and review comments. A final decision will be made following the public comment period. U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman is serving his first term representing Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
