Worst June Border Numbers on Record

Congressman Glenn Grothman (WI-06) released the following statement after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed data disclosing 207,426 encounters with illegal border crossers last month, making this the worst June on record.

“President Biden has yet again proven that open-border policies are successful in attracting a barrage of illegal migrants to our Southern border,” said Grothman. “In the month of June, Border Patrol officials were forced to stop 207,426 migrants, marking the fourth consecutive month of over 200,000 encounters at the border for the first time on record. In June 2020, CBP reportedly encountered 33,049 illegal border crossers, which marks an increase of 527 percent in two years.

“With three months remaining in the Fiscal Year, Border Patrol has already encountered more illegal migrants along the border in FY22 than in any year in the history of the Department of Homeland Security. This is utterly shameful, unacceptable, and worst of all, intentional. So long as President Biden maintains his failed immigration approach, cartels, criminals, and other bad actors will continue to exploit his open-border policies.

“One would think that recent reports of the horrific scene in San Antonio, Texas where over 50 migrants were found dead in the back of an 18-wheeler at the hands of human smugglers would cause our slumbering Congress to wake up and address this dire national emergency.

“Six migrants apprehended last month were on the terrorist watch list, bringing the total number of suspected terrorists apprehended to 56 this fiscal year. We, of course, do not know how many suspected terrorists there were among the estimated 450,000 got-aways who have evaded Border Patrol entirely over the last nine months.

“680 pounds of deadly fentanyl were seized at the border in June alone. Stopping the constant flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs from pouring into our communities by way of the Cartels is essential if we are serious about ending the drug overdose crisis facing our nation.

“President Biden’s self-inflicted catastrophe at our Southern border continues to embarrass the United States every day on the world stage. Border Patrol agents, migrants, and local communities are all left in more danger as a result of this nonstop surge in illegal immigration. I once again strongly urge President Biden and Vice President Harris to visit our Southern border to see the devastating consequences of their policies.”
