Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) tonight released the following statement after attending President Trump’s State of the Union address to Congress. The president reviewed 2017 accomplishments and focused on critical issues the U.S. will face in 2018. “I was very pleased with President Trump’s speech tonight. I was glad to see him cover the issues I hear from Wisconsinites every day – economy, national security, health care and bipartisanship. “The president recounted the successes of the economy this past year, including growth in manufacturing, which is a priority of mine, and expansive tax reform that benefits the middle class and allows working Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money. Our tax reform has also resulted in $1.5 billion in employee bonuses, increased wages and more parental benefits extended from companies around the country. "The president reiterated support for our military, which is particularly important with such a heated world environment in which North Korea is unpredictable. “I’m particularly glad that the president stood up to drug companies and called on them to bring down drug prices for the average American. For years, I’ve railed against drug companies for their outrageous prices that prevent patients from obtaining vitally-needed medication. “President Trump showed compassion in calling for the passage of right-to-try – something I’ve been trying to bring to the floor for quite some time. Right-to-try allows terminally ill patients to utilize potentially life-saving, experimental drugs. Sometimes this is a patient’s last chance for survival. “And it’s about time we finally have a President of the United States to go all out on tackling the opioid crisis, which has led to 64,000 deaths a year – more than deaths caused by homicides and car accidents combined. “Finally, it was great that President Trump made such a strong effort to speak in a bipartisan manner. After the speech, I made a point to thank the Democrats who were brave enough to defy their party leadership and stand to applaud the president.” ### U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman is serving his second term representing Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. |
