Grothman responds to IRS Data Breach

(Fond du Lac, WI) – Congressman Grothman renewed his call for government agencies to abide by stricter standards, after learning of the IRS's most recent data breach on Wednesday. Victims of identity theft need to be notified by the IRS as soon as it happens to ensure that tax filers' private information is better protected.

Just last week Congressman Grothman introduced H.R. 2398, the Social Security Identity Defense Act, to protect those Americans whose identity may have been compromised and require the IRS and the Social Security Administration to notify those individuals immediately. Currently, the IRS does not need to notify individuals of identity theft.

“This kind of breach at the IRS demands stricter standards from government agencies,” said Congressman Grothman. “Americans deserve to know that their identity is being compromised and if an issue like this arises in the future they are notified immediately. It is my hope this data breach is fully investigated and I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass my bill to protect Americans from identity theft."
