Stop the Presses: Illegal Immigrants Entering and Staying in the U.S. Way Up in July

Fond du Lac, Wis., August 15, 2021 | Timothy Svoboda (202-225-2476)

Congressman Glenn Grothman (WI-06) released the following statement after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released the border numbers for the month of July.

“On Thursday, the Biden Administration revealed that, in July, we allowed approximately 90,000 migrants to illegally cross our Southern border and remain in the country,” said Grothman. “This includes 58,976 ‘humanitarian releases’ and an estimated 31,000 ‘got-aways’ that were not detected by Border Patrol. This represents a 40% increase over June, when this number was at 64,074. In June, an additional 14,870 unaccompanied children were discharged to sponsors in the U.S. for a total of 78,944 people who entered illegally and remain in the country. Assuming a similar number of unaccompanied children in July, nearly 105,000 people will have entered the U.S. illegally and remain in the country in just one month. This is a shocking amount that has been severely underpublicized. The American people should be appalled. The media must do a better job of educating the public of the rapid increase in the amount of people coming to the U.S. illegally and staying. I call on all my colleagues in Congress and media outlets with any humanity to publicize this growing humanitarian crisis at our Southern border.

“Another number frequently referenced is the number of migrants encountered at the Southern border. That number went up from 188,829 in June to 212,672 in July. While many of those encountered are returned to Mexico, this number obviously screams for the immediate hiring of additional Border Patrol agents. The more encounters, the more paperwork and less time spent on the border.

“Agents I have talked to on my trips to the Southern border believe the number of 30,000 ‘got-aways” in June is too low, so the July number is also likely low. Whether you care about the American taxpayer, the number of COVID-positive immigrants coming across our Southern border, or the dramatic increase in the number of people coming here illegally, with overpopulation and potential crime to consider, action must take place immediately.

“This is the biggest threat to America in my lifetime. The Biden administration and its officials should be met with a deluge of questions whenever they are available. I beg my colleagues in Congress and all press outlets to disseminate these figures and demand action.”
