Washington,
March 20, 2018
Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) released the following statement about U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke’s visit to Horicon, WI: “Wisconsin has continued to be a leader in the preservation of its beautiful environment. This is made possible by Wisconsinites’ conservation efforts and respect for our natural resources, as well as efforts of organizations like Ducks Unlimited.” “I want to thank Secretary Zinke for being a leader on sportsmen’s conservation efforts and am honored that he chose Horicon to make this announcement. This investment in our natural resources will ensure that Wisconsinites will be able to enjoy everything our beautiful state has to offer for generations to come.” “In addition to its immediate positive impact, the restoration of our environment will ensure that our children and grandchildren, who are able to enjoy the outdoors today, will maintain respect for our natural resources and continue these conservation efforts for years to come.” Background Today, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke traveled to Horicon, WI to announce more than $1.1 billion in annual national funding for state wildlife agencies from revenues generated by the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration (PRDJ) acts. While visiting the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area, Secretary Zinke presented a ceremonial check to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for nearly $35 million. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources manages over 11,000 acres of the Horicon Marsh and almost every habitat project they complete includes PRDJ dollars, including prescribed burning, invasive species treatments, wetland berm maintenance, prairie seeding and restoration, timber stand improvement. The funds, which are distributed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, support critical state conservation and outdoor recreation projects. They are derived from excise taxes paid by the hunting, shooting, boating and angling industries on firearms, bows and ammunition and sport fishing tackle, some boat engines, and small engine fuel. -30- U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman is serving his second term representing Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. |
