Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) this week became an official co-sponsor of the bipartisan bill, H.R. 672. This bill will defer federal employees’ federally owned student loan payments until after a government shutdown ends.

During a government shutdown, federal employees have their paychecks deferred until after the government reopens. However, their obligation to repay federally owned student loans is not deferred. H.R. 672 will allow employees with federally owned student loans to delay repayment of the debt until after the government reopens. After reopening, employees may enter into an optional reimbursement period commensurate with the length of the shutdown.

H.R. 672 was introduced to the House by Congressman David Loebsack (D-IA).

“To be clear, I believe that federal employees who work during a government shutdown should receive their paychecks as usual.” Said Grothman. “Since this is not happening under the current system and House leadership refuses to bring  H.R. 271 to the floor to ensure it does, we need to safeguard federal employees from further harm by quickly passing H.R. 672. That is why I believe this bill is critically important to the thousands of federal employees who have federal student loans. There is no reason they should have to suffer interest payments and damage to their credit score because of a government shutdown. I look forward to working in a bipartisan manner with Congressman Loebsack, who personally asked for my help with this bill.”
